Ludditeticulous!

So, Linda brings home this $5 Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 2772 printer/scanner from the women’s club rummage sale, because my $20 yard sale Canon Pixma IP3500 that I bought for the Florida house ten years ago doesn’t have a scanner.

The HP is slow, ink carts are expensive, the print head is unserviceable but yes, it does have a scanner. For $5 I can run the ink dry and throw it away. Good so far, right?

Until this morning, when I wanted to scan something. It turns out the new, modern, presumably improved ‘HP Smart’ web app this thing runs on won’t fully configure with a USB connection. You must have the printer connected to a 2.4 Ghz wifi router. The Florida house, which we don’t own, has a 5 Ghz router.

Teeth were ground. I ran the driver install again, only this time I checked different boxes and guess what? If you’re obstinate enough to refuse to install HP Smart, the installer says, “Well, Luddite, if you’re too stuck in the past to take advantage of all the wonderful features offered by our web service, click here to install the old stuff.”

I now have HP Scan on the desktop screen. It works. Hallelujah.

I'm still throwing it away when the ink runs out.

    1. It was $10, but Linda waited until the club ran a half-price sale near closing time. I’d told her just to get it (It came with spare ink carts, for God’s sake. What’s the risk?) But no, she sensed my disapproval and held off so it’d be a steal. Maybe this is a reason we’re still married after 49 years.
